Dark circles are the universal symptom of fatigue, but not everyone who has dark circles is tired. If you have permanent dark circles even when you are well-rested, it could be due to your skin and facial tissue. Loss of fat under the skin and other changes can result in dark circles that make you look older and tired. Dr. Aviva Preminger is a board certified plastic surgeon who offers treatment for dark circles under eyes at her practice on the Upper East Side of NYC.

Chronic dark circles under the eyes are usually caused by hyperpigmentation, visible veins or shadows. Temporary dark circles are due to lack of sleep or dehydration that results in visible veins under the eyes. When you have chronic dark circles, the skin may be darker from more melanin, or the skin is thinner with less fatty tissue underneath. The tear troughs that extend down from the inner corner of the eyes can become deeper, creating shadows and half-circles under the eyes. Treatment for dark circles under the eyes depends on what is causing this condition.

Non-Surgical Dark Eye Circle Treatment

Most chronic dark circles can be treated with non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Cosmetic injections and laser skin treatments can address the cause of dark circles. A few options Dr. Preminger may suggest for removing dark circles under the eyes include:

  • Tear trough treatment – If you have deepened tear troughs or loss of volume under the eyes, facial fillers can eliminate dark shadows and rejuvenate the undereye area.
  • Dark pigmentation treatments – Dark circles under the eyes due to dark pigmentation can be reduced with laser skin treatment for hyperpigmentation.
  • Thin skin treatments – If your dark circles or eye bags are due to thin skin under the eyes, dermal fillers and collagen induction treatments can add volume to thicken and add volume under the lower eyelid skin.

In some cases, patients may have sagging skin and lost fat under the eyes that contribute to the appearance of eye bags and dark circles. To refresh the eyes, blepharoplasty, or a lower eyelid lift, may be recommended to remove excess skin.

If you look older and tired due to dark circles under the eyes, treatment is available to rejuvenate your appearance. To learn more about treatment for dark circles, schedule a consultation with Dr. Preminger. Contact our office in Manhattan to schedule your appointment.
