You look in the mirror, and you’re unhappy with what you see. With the current advances in plastic surgery, there’s no reason why you cannot have the appearance you always wanted. Maybe you think it’s too late in life to have plastic surgery or that you’re too young for it. In this article, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger explores the notion of whether or not there is an “ideal age” to get plastic surgery.
The most popular types of plastic surgery, based on age
Teenagers – Those under the age of 20 comprise about 4% of all plastic surgery procedures, as most plastic surgeons want to wait to perform a procedure until the body has finished growing. The most common type of plastic surgery among teens is rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job. A male breast reduction is becoming increasingly popular among teens as well.
20s – Rhinoplasty and breast augmentation are two of the most popular procedures among patients between the ages of 20-29. For those opting for the latter, both saline and silicone implants can be used for any patient age 21-up. In contrast, only saline implants are approved for teens who desire a breast augmentation procedure.
30s – Many people, by the time they enter the third decade of life, are looking to turn back the clock and reverse signs of aging. Is it any wonder, then, that Botox and liposuction are two of the most popular procedures among patients between the ages of 30 and 39? For women in their thirties who have had children, a mommy makeover could be the best option. This personalized treatment plan combines several different procedures performed at once; for example, liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a breast lift could be performed as part of a mommy makeover.
40s and Early 50s – By this stage in life, the signs of aging are ramping up and hard to deny. It’s natural for many people to seek help to retain the appearance of their youth. In addition to any of the procedures mentioned previously in this article, an eyelid surgery—clinically referred to as a blepharoplasty—or a facelift may be ideal methods of turning back the clock. A good skin care regimen during this time frame could help you avoid additional or more extensive operations later in life.
Later in life – A facelift is the most popular type of plastic surgery for patients who are 55 and older. Botox and dermal fillers also can be excellent choices for individuals in this age bracket who want to look and feel younger.
While these statistics reflect the most popular plastic surgeries for each age group, that doesn’t mean that you have to be a specific age to get the procedure you desire. In some cases, such as a facelift or neck lift, undergoing the procedure in your 40s or 50s means better results that last longer, rather than waiting until you are in your 60s or 70s. The bottom line is that there isn’t a magic age to when you should get plastic surgery.
