There is no question that women comprise the lion’s share of the plastic surgery market in Manhattan and beyond. However, more men than ever before have been realizing the vast potential of cosmetic enhancements to make them look as young and fit as they feel. According to a statement released by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), women had 9.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2012, while men had nearly one million procedures. This represents an increase of more than 106 percent in male plastic surgery procedures since 1997.
Over the last couple of years, men have continued in their trendsetting role, choosing procedures such as male breast reduction, liposuction, face lifts, and neck lifts. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were 26, 175 male breast reductions performed in the U.S. in 2014, which is a 29 percent increase since 2000. For men, plastic surgery offers a solution for looking young enough to stay competitive in a difficult job market, while also enjoying a boost of self-confidence.
Surgically enhanced buttocks on the rise
The trend toward more plastic surgeries performed on men isn’t the only statistic on the rise. In 2014, the quickest growing type of procedure performed on women was buttock augmentation. From 2013 to 2014, there was a 44 percent increase in the number of butt lifts performed and a 98 percent increase in the number of butt implants. Butt augmentation with fat injections is also becoming more popular; that procedure was up 15 percent over the same time period.
Restoring self-image for breast cancer patients
Breast cancer surgery, which may involve a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, is a particularly difficult treatment option for many women to recover from. In addition to coping with the disease itself, they face abnormalities with the shape, size, and appearance of their breasts. For these women, breast reconstruction surgery is a means toward restored self-image and self-esteem. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons implemented a Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign in 2012 to help women become empowered by learning about their plastic surgery options. It may be thanks in part to these efforts that the number of breast reconstruction surgeries has also been on the rise. Surgeons performed over 107,000 breast reconstruction surgeries in 2014, which was a seven percent increase from the previous year.
ASPS explains trends
According to a recent statement released by the ASPS, plastic surgery in general – all types for all patients – is on an upward climb that is not expected to slow down anytime soon. In 2014, there were 15.6 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures performed, which represents a three percent increase from 2013. ASPS President Scot Glasberg, MD, noted that, “The demand for plastic surgery continues to grow as medical advancements are made and technology improves resulting in a wider array of options for patients.” Glasberg went on to state that patients are feeling empowered by collaborating closely with their plastic surgeon to customize their choices.
