With all the advances in techniques and technology in plastic surgery, a facelift remains the longest-lasting method of facial rejuvenation that is available today. Clinically known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift improves the appearance of your entire face, tightening skin and repositioning muscle and fat to make for a firmer, younger-looking appearance.

Even though there were fewer facelifts performed in 2018 than 2017, more than 121,000 people in the United States still underwent a facelift last year, according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The effects of a full facelift can last as long as 10 to 15 years, but given that this is a significant and expensive surgery, you want to prolong the results as long as you can. Preminger Plastic Surgery is here to help you do just that with this guide.

Keep your skin protected from the sun

The sun can do serious damage to your skin. Protect yourself, especially after a facelift, by applying an SPF to your face every day. This is essential, even if your makeup contains an SPF, you still should apply an SPF cream to your face. Wear hats and sunglasses when heading outside… yes, even on cloudy days. And be sure to use a moisturizing cream on a regular basis, especially if you have dry skin.

Nutrition and hydration

You are what you eat (and drink). Maintain a well-balanced diet with plenty of healthy fats, along with vitamins, anti-oxidants, and nutrients. Consume sugar and processed foods only on occasion, or not at all. Eating right will keep you healthier overall and also helps your skin maintain that radiant-looking glow. You also need to stay hydrated, which means drinking plenty of water. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water each day to remain well hydrated.

Say no to tobacco

You have probably heard before about the dangers of smoking and how they can complicate recovery from any type of plastic surgery, especially one as major as a facelift. At Preminger Plastic Surgery, we recommend all of our patients stop smoking at least a few weeks prior to undergoing plastic surgery. Nicotine narrows the blood vessels and restricts blood flow in the outer layers of your skin, which can hinder the healing process. However, even after recovering from your facelift, you should refrain from smoking. The reduced blood flow can make your skin dry and discolored, while also depleting your skin from vital nutrients that keep it looking healthy.
