Preparing for neck lift surgery

Profile of young woman after neck surgeryThere are many misconceptions about all types of plastic surgery. So anyone considering neck lift surgery should schedule an initial consultation to discuss goals, expectations and potential risks of the procedure.

Generally speaking, the best candidates for neck lift surgery are individuals between the ages of 30 and 70 who are in good health, who have excess areas of skin beneath the chin that are exhibiting decreased elasticity, and those with excessive fat accumulations in the neck area that have caused a loss of definition.

Dr. Preminger will take a comprehensive medical history to assess overall health, existing medical conditions and any known drug allergies.

Prior to a necklift operation, it is important for patients who smoke to quit in order to facilitate proper healing. It is also advised that certain medications be stopped in advance of the surgery to stave off the risk of excessive bleeding. Dr. Preminger will take every possible step to ensure that you have the best possible experience both during and after your neck lift procedure.

Necklift procedure

Multiple surgical techniques can be used to perform a neck lift, depending on the desired results and the specific characteristics of the patient. In some cases, an incision is made behind the ear in order to facilitate the removal of excessive neck skin. In other instances, an incision is made beneath the chin so that the skin of the neck may be released from underlying muscles. This enables a tightening of the skin without the necessity of removing any excess.

In older patients, skin can be removed from beneath the chin by using a zig-zag-shaped incision, making for a more simplified procedure.

Some patients will also benefit greatly from liposuction performed during the same procedure, should there be particularly large amounts of excess neck fat. Once completed, all incisions will be stitched closed and the healing may begin. A typical neck lift will last roughly 2-3 hours and can be performed either under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia combined with sedation, depending on the patient’s desires.

In most cases, necklift surgery can be completed on an outpatient basis.

"Droopy skin, muscle laxity and fat deposits in the neck are the result of many factors including genetics, lifestyle choices, and simple aging. A successful neck lift gives patients a second chance to live without that nagging physical insecurity."

Recovery

It is necessary to allow for sufficient recovery time following a neck lift procedure, though most patients are able to return to normal activities and work within 1-2 weeks of their operation. However, individuals wishing to resume vigorous exercise or sports will need to wait at least three weeks before doing so.

Some bruising and swelling is likely to occur following a neck lift procedure, though cold compresses can be useful in minimizing the effects. Minor discomfort may be experienced by some patients, but it can easily be treated with conventional pain medications.

In certain instances, a drainage tube may be inserted during the procedure itself, though it will be removed within a day or two, causing minimal, if any, inconvenience. Staples and sutures are generally removed 5-10 days after surgery, and patients should take care not to disturb them in the meantime.

Though it is important to be mindful of any signs of infection that may arise, the neck lift recovery process actually requires little more than a willingness to rest, comfortable surroundings and some patience.

Great results from neck lift surgery

Sagging neck skin, wrinkles and double chins have an undeniable aging effect on men and women alike. A neck lift can reduce pockets of unwanted fat, rid the neck of dropping muscle bands and tighten slackened skin. The end result is a defined, rejuvenated appearance that you may have feared was impossible to reclaim.

Distinct improvements in appearance are visible almost immediately following a neck lift, though the final results may require another few months to fully emerge. Scarring resulting from these procedures is minimal, and frequently imperceptible.

What makes the neck lift particularly desirable for many is the fact that the beautiful results it routinely produces often last for years and years.
