There are hundreds of different types of cysts that occur in the body and skin. Cysts are fluid-filled sacks that can form due to an infection, injury or blockage, but most are harmless. On the skin, there are a few different cysts that can occur that may be undesired for aesthetics. Pilar, sebaceous and epidermoid cysts can occur on the face, neck or other exposed areas. If you have a skin cyst you want removed, Dr. Aviva Preminger offers facial epidermoid and sebaceous cyst removal at our clinic in Manhattan.

What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?

There are sebaceous glands in the skin all over the body except on the palms and soles of the feet. These glands only live for about a week, then they disintegrate, leaving behind the oily residue you may experience on the skin. When a sebaceous gland or duct is damaged or blocked, a cyst can form. A sebaceous cyst may appear as a white or yellow lump. They are usually not painful or harmful, but they can be a cosmetic concern if they appear on the face or other exposed skin.

What Is an Epidermoid Cyst?

The most common type of skin cyst is the epidermoid cyst. These can occur anywhere on the body but are more common on the face and torso. Epidermoid cysts are caused by damage to the skin that traps epidermis skin cells deeper in the dermis. The epidermis cells continue to grow but are not shed, creating a cyst inside the skin. Epidermoid cysts appear as lumps and usually are not painful or harmful.

Removing Skin Cysts

Dr. Preminger is a board-certified plastic surgeon who can carefully remove undesirable skin cysts. Depending on the type and size of the cyst, a few different methods can be used. Larger facial epidermoid cysts may need to be removed through excision to eliminate the entire cyst wall, as they can reoccur if not completely removed. Using her surgical skills, Dr. Preminger can eliminate most sebaceous and epidermoid cysts with no visible scarring.

If you need facial epidermoid or sebaceous cyst removal, contact the office of Aviva Preminger, M.D. in Manhattan. We can schedule a skin cyst removal consultation with Dr. Preminger at our clinic in Manhattan.
