Breast reconstruction surgery has become a common procedure amongst those suffering from cancer diagnosis, and other similar prognosis. Ivy-League educated Dr. Aviva Preminger chatted with Haute Beauty to discuss the breast reconstruction procedure, which patients qualify, how to prepare for the surgery and more.

The Cosmetic Town editorial team met with Dr. B. Aviva Preminger in her Manhattan office to learn more about the mini tummy tuck procedure. This popular procedure involves removing excess fatty tissue and skin in the lower abdomen, and tightening the abdominal wall, if necessary. Surgeons often combine the procedure with liposuction to create a better abdominal contour.

They explain: “During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles, especially the six-pack muscles, get stretched in order to accommodate the unborn baby. Many people think that the muscle will get tight again but that is not always the case. These muscles do not usually come back together again entirely. This is where a tummy tuck serves its purpose….” A mini tummy tuck may be sufficient, depending on how much tissue needs to be removed. Some patients opt to have their breasts reconstructed at the same time in a procedure known as a “mommy makeover” – another one of Dr. Preminger’s specialties.

In this exclusive interview, editors asked Dr. Preminger about the ideal candidate for mini tummy tucks, treatment alternatives, limitations, risks, recovery, downtime, when results are visible, and what follow-ups may be necessary. They conclude that it is always best to consult with an experienced doctor prior to making a decision about plastic surgery.

Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. B. Aviva Preminger recently published a “letter to the editor” in the New York Times in candid response to an article on mastectomy and breast reconstruction. In replying to the article, which focused on the fact that some post-reconstruction patients experience numbness and lack of sensation in the reconstructed breast, Dr. Preminger writes:

“Your article about breast reconstruction doesn’t paint a full picture. Of course, there is continued research to be done to improve our techniques as plastic surgeons to try to make women whole again after mastectomy. Our goal is to always fully inform women of the limitations and risks of reconstruction. That said […] the most recent outcome studies have demonstrated that women with successful breast reconstruction are significantly more satisfied with the appearance of their chest/breasts and fare better psychosocially and sexually than women with mastectomy alone.

Furthermore, they functioned better physically, experiencing less pain and fewer limitations.

Women facing mastectomy need to be provided with a truly balanced perspective.”

MONTREAL — Aviva Preminger, MD, highlights her case from the panel “My most challenging cases in the past 5 years.”

The case involved a 57 year old woman who was unhappy with upper and lower blepharoplasty results who presented with malar festoons. Festoons are severe bags under the eyelids and upper cheek area which can cause serious aesthetic problems, and also lead to peripheral vision loss in severe cases.
