Breast implants are designed to last 10-20 years, but there is not a guarantee on how long they will last. The FDA does not consider breast implants a lifetime device, meaning it is expected they will need to be replaced at some time during a patient’s lifetime with cosmetic breast surgery. Both saline and silicone implants can rupture from wear or impact, requiring removal of the implant. Dr. Aviva Preminger is a highly respected plastic surgeon in NYC who can perform breast implant rupture repair surgery if you need your implants removed.

Signs of a Breast Implant Rupture

Silicone, saline and hybrid options, like Gummy Bear implants, can all rupture. The outside shell is made from silicone, which is very strong, but it can be punctured or burst under impact or pressure. The signs of a breast implant rupture are different for each type.

  • Saline implant rupture – Saline implants will quickly deflate if there is a leak or rupture. The saline will be absorbed by the body, and the breast will flatten as the saline is released.
  • Silicone implant rupture – Silicone gel can leak from a ruptured implant, but it is not absorbed. The breast can change in shape, but there may not be any visible signs of rupture at first. Patients may experience lumps, burning, swelling or tingling around the breast area.
  • Gummy Bear implant rupture – Like silicone implants, Gummy Bear implant ruptures have few visible signs. However, Gummy Bear implants will retain their shape better than traditional silicone implants.

Some patients will not know a Gummy Bear or silicone implant has ruptured until an MRI is performed. For saline-based implants, there will be visible results quickly after the rupture.

Removing or Replacing a Ruptured Breast Implant

There are choices to be made when undergoing a breast implant rupture repair surgery. It is recommended that both implants be removed or replaced at the same time, even if only one implant ruptured. Dr. Preminger can discuss your options for removing or replacing a ruptured implant. Patients can choose to use a different type of implant or choose a different size. This is also an opportunity to have a breast lift or other procedure performed to enhance the appearance of the breasts.

If you have signs of a ruptured breast implant and need to discuss removal or repair surgery, contact our office in Manhattan. Our team can schedule a breast implant rupture repair consultation with Dr. Preminger to go over your options.
