Big boobs are not something that every woman covets. For some women, their large chest can cause neck and back pain, and make fitting into certain styles of clothing difficult or even impossible. Exercising can literally be a pain, not to mention the self-conscious feelings that may accompany having larger breasts. If you are considering a breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty, here is what your Upper East Manhattan plastic surgeon at Preminger Plastic Surgery wants you to know.
The Procedure
Performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia so that you are asleep throughout the entire procedure, it typically takes about two to three hours to complete. There are two types of incisions: the Anchor (inverted-T) or the Lollipop (vertical). For larger breasts, anchor incisions may be a better option. Lollipop incisions are typically used for moderately sized breast reductions. During your consultation with Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, one of NYC’s top plastic surgeons, she will assess your needs to determine which incision is best for you.
Once the incisions are made, your surgeon will remove excess breast tissue, shape, and lift the breasts to give you the desired look and feel. Many times patients experience immediate relief upon waking up out of surgery as their breasts feel lighter.
The Risks
Just like with any surgery, there are risks involved with breast reductions. It is always best to discuss these risks with your Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Preminger, but here are the most common risks associated with this procedure. Bleeding, infection and reaction to anesthesia are most common, as is decreased or lost sensation in the areola or nipple area, the inability to breastfeed, and visible scars. Remember that choosing an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon in NYC will reduce your chance of experiencing any of these risks, although some may be unavoidable depending on your body type or response to the surgery.
The Recovery
You should plan on taking between one to three weeks off from work, although individual healing times may vary. Dr. Preminger will discuss with you ways to prepare for your surgery, including stocking up on healthy foods, lots of water, and certain vitamins and supplements that can help speed up your healing process. You should be able to resume normal activities within a few days following surgery. In some cases, drains may be placed for a few days. Plan on wearing a sports bra for a few weeks, and avoid any exercise for two to three weeks following your procedure.
The Cost
Cost of a breast reduction will vary, depending on various factors. However, in some instances, your medical insurance may cover a portion of the cost if your condition causes you chronic neck or back pain.
