Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures have become “a top anti-retirement expense,” according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. People choose to postpone retirement for a variety of reasons. Many people are still paying for their kids’ education or saving up a bigger nest egg. Some baby boomers enjoy working for the socializing aspect or the feeling of positively contributing to society.

Whatever the case may be, it can be difficult to continue life in the spotlight as one ages. Professions like newscasters, actors, musicians, attorneys, CEOs, marketers, therapists, doctors, and others demand that people look as young and attractive as possible to compete in the market.

Plastic surgery is seen as a worthwhile investment in one’s career that few regret. To pay for plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures, some boomers are using Health Savings Account money or take out a low-interest healthcare loan.

Baby boomers turn back the clock and work longer

There are many benefits of getting cosmetic work done prior to retirement:

  • Look Friendlier – “When I have the ‘11s’ in between my eyebrows, I look too stern,” a county prosecutor told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Juries don’t like that,” the 63-year-old added. She opted to get Juvederm injections to reduce her wrinkles for longer periods of time.
  • Compete With Younger Coworkers – One patient told his doctor he was worried his employer was “trying to find someone younger,” so he went in for hair restoration to keep his six-figure job.
  • To Boost Confidence – Plastic surgery won’t make you happy necessarily, but research shows it does have an impact on self-confidence and esteem. Active baby boomers may think “60 is the new 40,” but it can be psychologically difficult when their physical appearances do not match up with how they’re feeling.

Top plastic surgery & cosmetic procedures for baby boomers

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the most popular baby boomer procedures include:

  • Botox Injections – About 80 percent of all Botox patients are between the ages of 40 and 55.
  • Liposuction – Almost 70 percent of liposuction procedures are done on baby boomers.
  • Breast Augmentation – Nearly half of all breast enhancements were done on 35 to 50-year-olds.
  • Tummy Tucks – The mid-section is the biggest problem-area for boomer women, according to Real Self. The “mommy makeover” that combines breast augmentation and tummy tuck is especially popular. In 2014, this combination procedure saw a 33 percent increase in popularity, in fact.
  • Eyelid Surgery – More than 200,000 blepharoplasty procedures are performed on baby boomers each year, with baby boomers accounting for roughly 90 percent of all eyelid surgeries. This surgery is just as popular for men as it is for women and provides a more refreshed look.
  • Facelifts and Necklifts – Face and necklifts remain the most dramatic way of turning back the clock. Last year, over 84,000 people over age 55 underwent neck and facelift surgery, which accounts for 66 percent. Another 33 percent of facelift patients included some of the younger boomers in the 40-54 demographic.
