Everyone eagerly awaits the arrival of summer, and now that it is upon us, days spent lounging at the beach are a priority for many. However, the summer months can be particularly hard on the skin due to the potentially damaging effects of the sun. Those who do not take sufficient precautions or follow sound sun care practices may find themselves with a aged appearance far sooner than they should.
Fortunately, it is not terribly difficult to give our skin the protection it needs to stay looking as youthful as it can for as long as possible, and there are a variety of anti-aging skin care treatments available to reverse the effects of sun damage.
Overexposure is the enemy
It is highly unlikely that those who enjoy participating in outdoor activities such as swimming, sailing, gardening or playing sports, can avoid sun exposure entirely. However, there are ways to ensure that exposure to the most dangerous rays is minimized. The hours between 10 am and 2 pm represent the most intense sunlight of the day, and it is advisable to limit exposure during that window whenever possible. If that is impractical, make certain to wear a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays. When staying outdoors for an extended period of time, or if you plan to be in the pool or the ocean, be sure to reapply your product every couple of hours. Do not neglect forgotten areas of the body such as the lips and scalp and make sure to apply SPF 15 lip balm and spritz a bit of sunscreen spray in to the part of your hair. Sunglasses and hats are also tremendously useful in guarding against burns and damage.
Give skin a much-needed drink
Moisturizing products are essential to keep skin looking young and fresh, even in the face of heavy sun exposure. For summer, light formulations can be ideal, as they are easier for the skin to absorb. Consider swapping a heavier foundation and powder combination for a tinted moisturizer that helps keep skin hydrated all day long. As always, there is no substitute for drinking a healthy amount of water, and doing so will give your skin the protection it needs against dryness and premature aging. To make boosting your water intake even more enjoyable, try snacking on fresh watermelon as you soak up some summer fun.
Tan the right way
Everyone understands the appeal of bronzed skin, particularly during the summer months. It always imparts a young, vigorous glow and lends a slimming effect that we all desire. However, the dangers of baking in the sun or going to a tanning bed are undisputed and must be actively avoided. That does not mean you need to sacrifice the healthy color you love, it just means that you need to acquire it safely. To that end, consider taking advantage of one of the many effective self-tanners available on the market today. Whether you prefer a foam, a cream, a spray or a towelette method of application, you are certain to find a product that provides you with beautifully safe, even and streak-free color.
