For years liposuction–also known as liposculpture–has been a successful treatment for removing stubborn pockets of fat around the hips, thighs and stomach area. Re-contouring your body’s profile has never been simpler thanks to recent advances in liposculpture techniques, reports a team of senior plastic surgeons from Rome and China.
“Based on our 20 years of experience and observations on three-dimensional liposuction, we can suggest it a reliable method with proven results,” conclude Manuel Francesco Castello, MD and Yixin Zhang, MD, PhD, who describe the joint results of lower body lipo on more than 4,000 patients.
The key to excellent results, say the surgeons, lies in skin retraction after the excess fat is removed.
Modern lipo techniques promote lasting results
Their findings were reported in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery—Global Open, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In order to modify the shape and tone of the flanks, trunk, thighs and hips, surgeons must not only remove excess adipose tissue (fat), but also thin the skin so that it retracts after surgery. The surgeons believe that the skin should not be thought of a “passive element” during liposuction, but rather a dynamic and structural constituent.
Of their 4,000 lipo patients, complication rates were below average, with only one person developing a post-op infection.
To facilitate skin retraction after fat removal, the surgeons claim that thinning the skin enables it to better adapt to the newly modified shape, thus avoiding unsightly bulges and ripples. In their report, Zhang and Castello detail the entire liposculpture procedure, including patient evaluation, preoperative skin markings, and the actual body sculpting surgery. As with most lipo treatments, patients are asked to wear compression garments to help reduce swelling and direct skin adaptation to the body’s new contours.
“If performed correctly, three-dimensional liposuction of trunk, hips and thighs can yield very satisfying outcomes because of the excellent contour and enhanced skin retraction provided by the thin cutaneous [skin] adipose flap,” wrote the plastic surgeons.
The short and long-term results of their patients were monitored with follow up appointments, which revealed excellent outcomes despite later pregnancies or fluctuations in weight.
As with any type of cosmetic surgery, the researchers stress the importance of realistic expectations and good post-operative care. For most, a healthy diet and regular exercise can ensure liposuction results last a lifetime.
