For women and men, a facelift can turn back time by tightening skin, eliminating facial wrinkles, and making your face appear decades younger. There are three types of facelifts – upper facelift, mid facelift, and lower facelift. Today on the blog, a Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. B. Aviva Preminger is discussing the difference between these different types of facelifts. So, let’s talk facelifts!

What’s the difference?

An upper facelift focuses on the eye region and above. The mid facelift procedure includes the area of the face from the corners of the eyes to the corners of the mouth, including the nose region, cheeks, and upper lip. A lower facelift includes the corners of the mouth and below, tackling those nasolabial folds known as “laugh lines,” and the jawline. Lower facelifts may also include underneath the chin such as the neck area.

Many people think that a facelift, in general, will include all of these areas, while that is not the case. Generally, a facelift includes the lower two-thirds of the face, and a brow lift would include the upper portion of the face.

Which type of facelift is right for me?

The best way to determine which facelift is right for you is to receive a consultation with board-certified Manhattan plastic surgery, Dr. Preminger. She will assess your needs and discuss your desires for an improved appearance when determining which procedure is best for you.

What the best age for a facelift?

Generally, most facelifts are performed between the ages of 35 and 65. However, the purpose of a facelift is to preserve and maintain a youthful appearance, which makes between the ages of 45-50 the prime age for getting a facelift. The sooner the signs of aging are addressed, the better the results will be and will last longer. However, regardless of age, if you are seeing noticeable signs of aging, and are in good health overall, you may be a candidate for a facelift.

Signs of aging include:

  • Jowls or loss of jawline definition
  • Wrinkles under the eyes
  • Deep lines around corners of mouth or nose
  • Excess fat deposits around the neck

There are other surgical procedures to target specific areas such as the neck, brows, or eyelids. Speak to your surgeon and discuss exactly what it is that you wish to improve about your appearance. While a facelift may seem like the most obvious choice, there may be a less invasive treatment that can treat the areas of concern.
