FDA Approves New Juvederm Vollure XC Filler

Americans looking to turn back the clock to a more youthful appearance have yet another tool in their arsenal as of this month. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new hyaluronic acid dermal filler manufactured by Allergan. Juvederm Vollure XC has been approved in Europe since 2013 (under the name Juvederm Volift), but will now be available to Americans over 21. NYC plastic surgeon Dr. B. What is Juvederm Vollure XC?

The new dermal filler is approved for “the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.” Clinical trials found that 59 percent of patients had significant improvements in smile lines around the mouth for up to 18 months. Satisfaction rates were good – with 82 percent of patients pleased with their results at six months, and 68 percent still satisfied at eight.

What makes this particular product so exciting is that it requires fewer injection sessions and lasts up to 18 months.Vycross technology is used to link high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid together through cross-linking to form a more connected gel. The product is substantial enough to fill depressions, but is soft enough to move naturally with facial expressions.

Another advantage of Juvederm Vollure XC is that this formula produces very minimal swelling, which means shorter recovery time. Side effects like swelling, bruising, tenderness, lumps, redness, pain, discoloration, and itching were generally very mild and resolved within a week.

Like other Juvederm products, Vollure XC includes Lidocaine as a numbing agent to ensure patient comfort.
