The American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) periodically releases statistics on the numbers of each type of cosmetic surgery that patients in the U.S. have. The latest data reflect a rising demand for autologous fat transfers to sculpt the body and facelifts to turn back the clock. In 2016, the ASPS reported that cosmetic surgeons in the U.S. performed 17.1 million surgical and minimally invasive procedures. These statistics aren’t surprising to New York City cosmetic surgeons who talk with patients every day about beauty enhancements and age-defying procedures.
“Facelifts are among the most effective procedures for taking years off one’s appearance,” says Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, who has a cosmetic surgery office on the Upper East Side. “Fat grafting is particularly appealing for some patients because of its minimally invasive nature—plus the fact that the patient is using his or her own fat to sculpt the body.”
Facelifts
Women often spend years fighting the effects of time and gravity with anti-wrinkle creams, dermal fillers, and Botox injections. But after a certain point, these topical and minimally invasive treatments simply aren’t effective. Undergoing a facelift is a dramatic transformation that lets women be happy with what they see in the mirror. So it’s no surprise that, after having dropped out of the top five plastic surgeries in 2015, facelifts made their way back into this category in 2016. According to the ASPS, there were 131,106 facelifts performed in the U.S. in 2016, which is a four percent increase from 2015.
Fat transfers
Patients have long known that liposuction is an effective way to sculpt the body by removing unwanted bulges of fat. But, increasingly, patients have been asking for that removed fat to be injected back into the body in strategic places. This treatment is known as fat transfers, fat grafting, or fat injections.
To perform a fat transfer, the plastic surgeon uses minimally invasive liposuction. The extracted fat is processed and then injected into the areas that the patient wants to lift and sculpt, such as the buttocks or face. Fat grafting can even be used for breast augmentation. The ASPS reports that, in 2016, breast augmentation with fat grafting increased 72 percent and butt lifts with autologous fat increased 26 percent.
Labiaplasty
A labiaplasty involves the removal of extra tissue of the labia to improve a woman’s functional comfort and aesthetic self-confidence. The ASPS didn’t begin tracking labiaplasty requests until 2015. The stats for 2016 reflect a 39 percent increase from the previous year, with over 12,000 women requesting the procedure.
