Dr. Preminger Moderates YPS Fresh Faces Panel in Boston

The field of reconstructive and plastic surgery is constantly evolving, giving surgeons the opportunity to advance their skills and techniques in challenging cases – whether doing post-bariatric surgery body contouring or revision rhinoplasty. At this year’s Plastic Surgery The Meeting in Boston, a new generation of surgeons was afforded a unique forum in which to introduce their solutions and methods of addressing challenging surgical cases in the “Young Plastic Surgeons (YPS) Fresh Faces” panel, moderated by YPS Steering Committee Chair, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, MD.

The primary goals of the panel are to educate on pertinent topics as well as shed light on up-and-coming members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This year’s YPS Fresh Faces panel was particularly exciting in that three YPS Steering Committee members presented cases that were evaluated, challenged and critiqued by mentors from their own fellowship programs.

YPS Panel addresses challenging plastic surgery cases

In the past, Fresh Faces’ panelists presented their management techniques and answers to complex surgical problems, which were evaluated by an audience. This year’s panel raised the bar, essentially having young plastic surgeons – who are deemed leaders in specialty fields — “face-off” against the very doctors who had trained them. This addition brought a heightened level of scrutiny, as mentors candidly questioned and commented on their former students’ case management techniques.

The three panelists had completed diverse fellowships and represented three different sub-specialties: microsurgery, post-weight loss body contouring and aesthetic surgery.

Through the course of the presentation, it became evident that the panel’s senior surgeons had some divergent opinions about the execution of surgical techniques and post-operative care, but despite these differences, they felt their former mentees had represented them commendably.

The panel presented before a packed room, due in part to the efforts of moderator and YPS Steering Committee Chair, Dr. Preminger. The YPS Fresh Faces panel also explored topics regarding DVT prophylaxis and patient safety, as well as clinical decision making.
