When buying a bra or trying on a bathing suit, have you noticed that a difference in the size or shape of your breasts? Breast asymmetry is frustrating and embarrassing … and common. This condition affects more than half of all women. However, for some, this asymmetry is more pronounced. There are a number of reasons why a woman’s breasts can change in size or volume. Knowing that other women suffer from the same condition can be a comfort, but it doesn’t change that breast asymmetry can make you feel self-conscious or lower your confidence. Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, your Manhattan board-certified plastic surgeon, understands this, which is why we are sharing ways to correct breast asymmetry.

Options to Correct Breast Asymmetry

A consultation is always the first step for any patient who comes to our boutique plastic surgery office on the Upper East Side. At this meeting, you and Dr. Preminger will work together to determine your ideal breast size. She will review your medical history, evaluate any contributing factors, and then present you with a treatment plan that represents the best course of action to reach your desired outcome.

You have some decisions to make before the actual procedure begins. Perhaps you will opt to have your smaller breast enlarged through the placement of an implant. Maybe you would rather achieve symmetry by reducing the larger breast? In some situations, you may need to have the same procedure on both breasts. This can happen when you have very large breasts that happen to be of different sizes, and you have a breast reduction performed on both breasts. Alternatively, if you have small breasts that are asymmetrical, you may opt for a breast augmentation that increases the size of both breasts to a new, identical size.

Let’s take a deeper look at each of these procedures.

Breast Augmentation

The most popular type of plastic surgery in the U.S., augmentation is one of the specialties of Dr. Preminger. She can enhance your existing bust line with saline, silicone, or gummy bear breast implants. Dr. Preminger offers hybrid implants, which provide a beautiful look of silicone, but with the safety of saline. Women all over the country choose such implants because they can achieve the look they want without compromising beauty. No matter the type of implant you choose, breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 1-2 hours to complete. Following the procedure, most patients are back at work in 4-7 days, resume light exercise after two weeks, resume strenuous activity after six weeks, and see all post-surgical swelling subside in 8-12 weeks.

Breast Reduction

Dr. Preminger performs breast reduction surgery in Manhattan by making incisions to remove excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin while minimizing scarring. Breast reduction surgery can be accomplished through a series of small incisions made in the skin surrounding the nipple. However, the more common reduction procedure is known as a “lollipop reduction,” and involves making an incision around the areola, then in a vertical line down the center of the breast. With this method, Dr. Preminger can remove moderate amounts of excess tissue, skin, and fat with minimal scarring. Also, an outpatient procedure, breast reduction takes about 3-4 hours to complete using general anesthesia. After your breast reduction, you can be back at work in 1-2 weeks, resume light exercise following two weeks of recovery, begin strenuous activity after six weeks, and see all post-surgical swelling resolve after 8-12 weeks.
