No matter what season it is, sun exposure poses a threat to your skin. One of the most common types of skin damage are sunspots, which are flat brown spots that form on your skin due to sun exposure. Also known as liver spots or age spots, these are noncancerous and don’t threaten your health, but they can make you unhappy with your appearance. Dr. B. Aviva Preminger understands your desire to have beautiful, youthful-looking skin. That’s why she has gathered some helpful hints on how to prevent sunspots and how noninvasive cosmetic treatments could make these areas less prominent.

To avoid sunspots, protect your skin from the sun

The most critical preventative option is sunblock. Even if you are using a sunscreen with a high SPF, lots of patients don’t realize that applying just once per day is not that effective. In actuality, it’s the frequency of which you apply sunscreen, not a high SPF that yields the best protection.

You should apply sunscreen once every two hours if you’re swimming or at the beach. For daily use, once every six hours is adequate. There are dozens of products like makeup and facial lotions that contain sunblock. Be sure to choose cosmetics that contain an SPF of at least 30.

Also, try to avoid being out in the sun during peak hours. We’re not suggesting you become a homebody who has to hide indoors during daylight. The sun’s rays are most harmful between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outside during these peak hours for an extended time, you should wear sunglasses, a hat, and breathable clothing that protect your arms and legs. This helps minimize your risk of developing sunspots, skin pigment changes, and premature signs of aging.

Treatment for sunspots

If your skin already has sustained damage from sun exposure, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger has many options at Preminger Plastic Surgery that can help you.

Our Fractionated CO2 Laser treatment delivers laser energy that removes the outermost layer of skin, stimulating collagen renewal for a softer, glowing complexion. This non-surgical option reduces the appearance of sunspots, as well as other types of skin damage such as scars from acne or chickenpox, discolored skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Fractora uses radio frequency (RF) technology, combined with microneedling, to generate heat beneath the top layers of the skin and encourage the production of collagen to heal skin imperfections. Fractora produces skin that is younger-looking and tighter while also reducing sun damage.

Lumecca is considered one of the optimum methods of treating sun-damaged skin, not only on the face but also on the neck, hands, limbs, and décolletage. The target area is exposed to intense pulsed light (IPL) and reduces the prominence of sunspots, freckles, vascular lesions, or redness from rosacea through a process known as photothermolysis.

The beauty of these treatments is that they often can be performed during a short appointment and offer no downtime. Dr. Preminger also offers multiple skincare products you can purchase and use at home to help improve the look of damaged skin.
