To look your best, you have to be diligent about your diet and exercise regimen but what about your skin? Your skin is the most visible part of you, but to keep it looking great requires a different kind of diligence. Your Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. B. Aviva Preminger suggests you follow this nighttime routine to maintain glowing skin.

Remove your makeup

No ifs, no buts, no exceptions; leaving your makeup on when you go to bed can be terrible for your skin. The remaining makeup mixes with the dirt and oil that accumulate naturally on your skin throughout the day and clog pores, which leads to blackheads and breakouts.

Keep it clean

After your makeup has been removed, you should wash your face. A facial cleanser is specially made to hydrate your skin and remove any dirt, oil, and other impurities. Rub the cleanser gently into your skin, rinse with lukewarm water, and gently pat dry to complete the process. Going to bed with clean skin will keep your skin looking its best the next morning. One of Dr. Preminger’s favorite facial cleansers is a papaya enzyme cleanser, available at our boutique practice that is specially formulated with papaya extract as the key ingredient to clean your skin while also naturally providing gentle exfoliation.

Got glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is the active ingredient in most varieties of peel pads, and is used to remove dead skin cells from the outer layer of skin to even out your skin tone and also to brighten the overall appearance of your skin. Using glycolic acid on a regular basis can increase sun sensitivity, so make sure a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 remains part of your usual daytime skin-care routine. A lightweight, silky sunscreen will make applying your make-up a breeze, and provide the protection that you need for your face.

When in doubt, moisturize

You should be moisturizing your skin twice each day after cleansing your face: when you wake up and again before going to sleep. The type of moisturizer you should choose depends on your skin type. Got oily skin? Opt for a water-based moisturizer. Sensitive skin usually calls for a moisturizer that is fragrance-free, as the ingredients used to make fragrances can cause irritation. For dry skin, a long-lasting, hydrating moisturizer is a great choice. You may need to use different moisturizers on different areas of your face if you have combination skin. If you are concerned about the signs of aging, opt for a moisturizer like Regenerating AlphaRet® Overnight Cream, which can even skin tone while minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This restorative night cream, which is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and can be applied to the face or neck, also is available at our boutique practice. In addition to moisturizing dry skin and reducing the signs of aging, this cream can increase the firmness and elasticity of your skin.

Don’t forget the eye cream

If you have dark circles or puffiness under your eyes, it can be difficult to look your best. Nightly use of an eye cream minimizes these appearance issues, as well as crow’s feet. After your nighttime moisturizing, apply small dots of eye cream around the eye, gently patting the cream around your eye area using your ring finger. Avoid rubbing, as this could stretch the delicate skin. If you would like to learn more about our All-trans-Retinol eye cream that reduces those dark circles while improving tone, texture, firmness, and elasticity, contact our office.

Get enough rest

The health benefits of a good night’s sleep have been well chronicled but being well rested is also good for your skin. In 2015, researchers at the University of California Irvine released the findings of a study that determined new skin cells grow at a faster rate during sleep. Make it a priority to get quality sleep on a nightly basis, and you will notice the difference when you look in the mirror!
