When it comes to plastic surgery, most patients do their homework by choosing a qualified surgeon and finding out what to expect both during and after their procedure. However, there is one step that is just as important as all the rest – preparing for your surgery by eating right. Being proactive and eating healthy before your procedure can play a crucial role in your recovery. One of Manhattan’s board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, has some tips on what you should eat before your surgery.

Eating healthy is always important, specifically before surgery. Certain vitamins and minerals consumed prior to your surgery can actually help reduce swelling and bruising. Bear in mind, however, that while eating healthy foods can help reduce the amount of swelling or severity of bruising, it will not eliminate it entirely.

Foods such as green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens pack an abundance of vitamin K, which helps prevent excessive bleeding by aiding in proper blood coagulation. Vitamin K also is a key player in how bad you bruise. A body that lacks vitamin K is more likely to experience bruising more than someone who has sufficient levels.

An herbal supplement to consider taking is Arnica Montana, which holistically combats bruising, and muscle soreness. Since herbal supplements, although natural, can be dangerous if not consumed correctly or in the proper dosage, be sure to speak with your Manhattan plastic surgeon before taking any. Current medical history or medications that you may be taking could interfere with its effectiveness.

To help with swelling and inflammation, consume pineapple and papaya. Both of these tropical fruits contain protease enzymes – bromelain and quercetin, which are critical in combating swelling and puffiness following your procedure. It is advised that you consume these fruits often in the weeks prior to your procedure.

Tumeric is another notable herb that possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Its compound Curcumin is what gives this herb the power to combat inflammation far better than what aspirin or ibuprofen can do, according to studies. You can consume turmeric as a dried spice in many dishes or even add fresh turmeric to your favorite foods or smoothies.

Staying hydrated is important both before, and after your procedure. Consume lots of water in the days leading up to your procedure, as well as afterward. Water helps flush away toxins, which will speed up the healing process.
