This year’s Plastic Surgery: The Meeting conference was a huge success, bringing together thousands of the world’s leading plastic and reconstructive surgeons. The annual event, which is organized by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), enables doctors from more than 50 countries to share their latest research on surgical techniques, breakthrough products and emerging trends within the industry.

“These annual gatherings are vital to advancing positive patient outcomes and delivery of the overall best care possible,” explained ASPS President Dr. David H. Song. The 2016 international expo, held September 23-27 in Los Angeles, featured dozens of instructional courses and half-day seminars given by expert surgeons. Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, who chairs the Young Plastic Surgeon Steering Committee of the ASPS and also holds a seat on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons board, attended the five-day event, and provided great insight into the latest technologies and initiatives affecting the industry.

Plastic Surgery: The Meeting

The expo gave attendees a unique opportunity to learn about emerging skin care and beauty products as well as new technology used in minimally invasive body contouring procedures – many of which appeal to men. CoolSculpting, which permanently eliminates fat cells without incisions or anesthesia, is one of the most popular innovations, and is increasingly requested by male patients. “Patients in general, especially men, are looking for less downtime and quicker recovery… The daddy-do-over has become the logical counterpart to the mommy makeover,” Dr. Preminger told a Swivel newsroom contributor.

Other topics explored at the conference included breakthroughs in transgender surgery, the importance of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, which uses the patient’s own blood cell antibodies to promote healing, as well as major advances in dermal fillers that provide plastic surgeons with more options for rejuvenating targeted areas of the face.

Young Plastic Surgeon Steering Committee initiatives

In an interview with Healio /Aesthetics, Dr. Preminger took a moment to explain some of the exciting initiatives and service projects performed by the Young Plastic Surgeon Steering Committee at this year’s conference. The committee sold scarves and ties at the meeting in an effort to raise awareness and funds to benefit the Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day fund. The marketing project yielded over $22,000 for the BRA Day fund, which was established by the Plastic Surgery Foundation.

The Young Plastic Surgeon Steering Committee also held their yearly Fresh Faces panel, enabling young surgeons to present challenging, complex cosmetic and reconstructive surgery cases for evaluation by experienced mentors.
