Report: U.S. Leads the World in Plastic Surgery

woman's tummy marked for tummy tuck

The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) recently released a new statistical report on the popularity of plastic surgery procedures around the world. During 2016, more patients sought plastic surgery in the U.S. than in any other country, with a total of 4.2 million treatments. Brazil, a land famed for Brazilian butt lifts, came in a distant second at 2.5 million cosmetic treatments. For plastic surgeons, the report comes as no surprise. It’s well-known that plastic surgery numbers have been steadily climbing in the country for quite a few years.

Most popular plastic surgery procedures

Surgical breast procedures remain the most popular type in the U.S., and more of them were performed here than any other country. In total, U.S. patients received 19 percent of all of these procedures performed around the world. The country took second place for all procedures that fall into the “body” category. This includes liposuction, butt augmentation, and tummy tucks or abdominoplasties. Americans also placed second for facial and head treatments. These totaled 410,784 during 2016. Eyelid surgeries were the most popular.

Part of the reason for the increasing trend is perhaps that public perceptions of plastic surgery have changed. It’s no longer seen as vain, but rather as something that people do to give themselves self-confidence and to invest in themselves. Additionally, more men than ever are turning to plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancements like dermal fillers as a way to beat the clock and stay competitive in the workplace.

How to decide if plastic surgery is right for you

Millions of people have had plastic surgery and minimally invasive cosmetic enhancements over the years. Why not you? If you’re dissatisfied with some aspect of your appearance and it’s affecting your self-esteem, then it may be worth your time to talk to a surgeon about your options. You’re not obligated to move forward with the procedure if you change your mind.

Only a plastic surgeon can determine if you’re a good candidate for a particular procedure, but most people in good overall health are. Do disclose your medical conditions, medications, prior surgeries, recent hospitalizations, and reproductive history. This last category of information is significant for women because some surgeries, like tummy tucks, are best performed after a family is done growing.

How to find a great plastic surgeon in NYC

Once you’ve decided to explore plastic surgery further, plan to spend some time researching plastic surgeons near you in New York City. Remember that cosmetic operations are still surgeries, and so it’s crucial to work with a surgeon who is board certified and is recognized among peers for an enduring commitment to healthcare excellence. Choose a surgeon who will take the time to listen carefully to your concerns and craft a treatment plan that suits you.

After doing careful research into their options, many New Yorkers decide that Dr. B. Aviva Preminger is the right plastic surgeon for them. As a board-certified doctor with impeccable credentials and a stellar reputation among her peers, Dr. Preminger can help you get the look you want. Call her Park Avenue office at 212.706.1900.

Would Plastic Surgery Make a Good Graduation Gift?

Beautiful fashionable girl taking a selfie with smartphone

Forget the new car—the hot new graduation gift is plastic surgery. College graduates, and perhaps to a lesser extent, high school graduates, have increasingly been receiving a visit to the plastic surgery office as a reward for their academic accomplishments. Cosmetic enhancements can make an ideal graduation gift, since it may take some time to recover, depending on the surgery. Graduates can have the procedure before starting a new job or heading off to college in the fall.

“Millennials deserve that boost of self-confidence that comes from fixing cosmetic issues that have troubled them for a long time, but we do want to make sure that each of our patients has reasonable expectations,” explains Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, a plastic surgeon in New York City. “The right plastic surgery procedure can definitely help them feel more socially secure.”

Reasons for gifting plastic surgery

Everyone deserves to feel secure in their own bodies, regardless of age. As a graduation gift, plastic surgery supports self-reinvention. Graduating from high school and moving away to a new city and a new campus—or graduating from college and starting a career—both signal significant life transitions. They are opportunities for graduates to get a fresh start, be more socially outgoing, and feel more capable.

Self-assurance is an amazing gift to give a recent grad, and that extra boost of confidence can do wonders during job interviews and nerve-wracking oral presentations.

In some cases, the gift of plastic surgery is one that supports physical comfort and good health. Breast reduction surgery, for example, may be appropriate for either ladies or men whose overly large breasts cause discomfort.

Factors to consider before having plastic surgery

Of course, plastic surgery isn’t right for every graduate. Surgeons thoroughly assess each patient on a case-by-case basis before recommending treatment options. Generally, graduates may be good candidates for cosmetic enhancements if they have reasonable expectations for the outcome. Patients should know why they want the surgery and what they hope to get out of it. It isn’t advisable to get surgery simply because a boyfriend or girlfriend might like it.

Plastic surgery is a serious decision that shouldn’t be made on a whim. A graduate might be a good candidate if he or she has been troubled by some physical feature for a long time and has given serious thought to the procedure. Because of all of these factors, parents and grandparents who want to give graduates the gift of plastic surgery should make the decision only after careful discussion with the student and the surgeon.

When you’re ready to start the next phase of your life and you feel that cosmetic enhancements will help, schedule a consult with Dr. B. Aviva Preminger in her Manhattan office. Dr. Preminger is renowned throughout NYC and beyond for her careful and personalized attention to each patient, her technical skills, and her artistic results. She undertakes an intensive evaluation process to ensure that surgical enhancements are right for the individual patient. Call today to set up a one-on-one consultation!

Financing Cosmetic Surgery with Your Tax Refund

During 2016, Americans spent about $16 billion on cosmetic surgeries and enhancements. It’s quite likely that even more Americans wanted to invest in cosmetic surgery, but weren’t sure they could afford it. Since it’s usually considered an elective procedure, cosmetic surgery isn’t often covered by health insurance. But if you have your heart set on improving your looks, tax refund season might be the best time to do it.

A look at the numbers

Some people use their tax refund to pay down debt or perhaps take a summer vacation. But an increasing number of Americans—36 percent, in fact—plan to use part or all of their tax refund to get the look they want. That’s according to a RealSelf.com survey. The same website conducted the same survey last year and found that 29 percent of those surveyed planned to spend all or part of their tax refund on cosmetic enhancements.

One of the perks of going this route is that there are cosmetic enhancements available at a range of price points. Those with a smaller refund might opt for laser skin resurfacing. Dermal fillers, Botox injections, and Latisse (which nurtures thicker, longer eyelashes) are also popular choices.

If you’re expecting a larger tax refund—or you aren’t shy about chipping in a few extra bucks—consider getting a procedure that will yield more dramatic results. Liposuction remains a popular choice, but CoolSculpting is also quite popular because it is noninvasive. Both will help you get beach-ready for the summer. Other top choices include breast augmentation and breast lift, male breast reduction, rhinoplasty, facelift, and neck lift.

What to consider before choosing plastic surgery

There are many factors that go into making the decision. In regards to financing the procedure, it’s always a good idea to wait for that check from Uncle Sam. You’ll get more money back by waiting a few extra weeks compared to securing a cash advance on your refund from a tax filing company.

Use the time to carefully consider if cosmetic surgery is right for you, and if so, which procedure might offer the most bang for your buck.

When you meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon, you’ll explain all of your areas of concern and your desired results. The surgeon will then discuss your recommended treatment plan. It’s often more effective to go into the office knowing what you might like to change, but not having your heart set on a specific procedure. The plastic surgeon might find, for instance, that Kybella injections might be a better option for dealing with a double chin compared to liposuction under the chin.

Artistic cosmetic surgery in NYC

Investing in your appearance with your tax refund may be a smart decision, but choosing the cheapest plastic surgery office on the basis of cost alone is never wise. When you select a plastic surgeon, you should consider training, credentials, experience, reputation, and your personal comfort level with the surgeon.

Plastic surgery patients in NYC choose Dr. B. Aviva Preminger because of her impeccable credentials and stellar reputation, along with her uncompromising commitment to personalized patient care and artistic, natural-looking results. Call Dr. Preminger’s Manhattan plastic surgery office to schedule your confidential consultation.

FDA Approves New Juvederm Vollure XC Filler

Americans looking to turn back the clock to a more youthful appearance have yet another tool in their arsenal as of this month. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new hyaluronic acid dermal filler manufactured by Allergan. Juvederm Vollure XC has been approved in Europe since 2013 (under the name Juvederm Volift), but will now be available to Americans over 21. NYC plastic surgeon Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, MD says there are some very exciting benefits with the new dermal filler.

What is Juvederm Vollure XC?

The new dermal filler is approved for “the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.” Clinical trials found that 59 percent of patients had significant improvements in smile lines around the mouth for up to 18 months. Satisfaction rates were good – with 82 percent of patients pleased with their results at six months, and 68 percent still satisfied at eight.

Juvederm Vollure XC benefits

What makes this particular product so exciting is that it requires fewer injection sessions and lasts up to 18 months. Vycross technology is used to link high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid together through cross-linking to form a more connected gel. The product is substantial enough to fill depressions, but is soft enough to move naturally with facial expressions.

Another advantage of Juvederm Vollure XC is that this formula produces very minimal swelling, which means shorter recovery time. Side effects like swelling, bruising, tenderness, lumps, redness, pain, discoloration, and itching were generally very mild and resolved within a week.

Like other Juvederm products, Vollure XC includes Lidocaine as a numbing agent to ensure patient comfort.

Juvederm Vollure XC alternatives

Juvederm Vollure XC is an exciting product, but it’s not the only way to create a natural, youthful countenance, says Dr. Preminger. The Juvederm Vycross collection includes Voluma (for the upper face), Volbella (for the lips), and Vollure XC (for the mouth and mid-face around the cheeks.) Some doctors report using Vollure XC to lift the brow and forehead areas as well.

“Dermal fillers vary based on longevity and thickness, so I offer a full suite of different products that can be customized based on a patient’s condition and desires,” says Dr. Preminger.  For example, Radiesse and Perlane are thicker fillers that can be injected deeper into fatty tissues to fill severe wrinkles and to shape the cheeks, chin, and jawline.

Dr. Preminger is also trained in administering alternative fillers like Radiesse and Belotero, as well as Botox — which effectively treats wrinkles in a completely different way. For patients desiring a more dramatic transformation, she can perform a full suite of surgical procedures, including facelifts, brow lifts, and eye lifts.

Dr. B. Aviva Preminger has been working with Juvederm XC and Juvederm Voluma for many years. The ivy-league-educated, board-certified plastic surgeon offers the most up-to-date anti-aging products, administered in a safe environment, with skilled hands. Importance of Choosing a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Whether you’re considering Botox injections or a tummy tuck, there are many important decisions when selecting a plastic surgeon. To reduce the risk of experiencing complications or an unfavorable outcome, it’s crucial to find a doctor who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Board certification signals that the surgeon has met several demanding requirements, has undergone rigorous training, and has been critically assessed for their ethical standing in how they approach cosmetic and reconstructive challenges.

Just like any other medical treatment or surgery, even minimally invasive cosmetic enhancements carry a certain degree of risk. Practitioners who do not possess advanced education and specialty training can make grave errors during the simplest of procedures.

The recent popularity of minimally-invasive “lunch time” treatments including lip augmentation and dermal fillers has spurred a market saturation of doctors – many of whom do not have board certification – offering facial rejuvenation. Getting a collagen boost and plumper cheeks with injectables may seem non-invasive and relatively risk-free, but serious complications can happen in the hands of an unskilled practitioner. Before scheduling a procedure, always ask if your doctor is board-certified by the American Board for Plastic Surgery and inquire about their experience and training injecting fillers in the face.

Here are a few more reasons why it’s paramount to use a board-certified surgeon for any type of aesthetic or reconstructive surgery or procedure.

Extensive training & expertise

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty requiring years of education and in-depth training. By choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, you can rest assured that your practitioner has successfully completed a minimum of five years of supervised surgical training focused on plastic surgery of the face and body.  Any licensed doctor with a medical degree can promote themselves as a “cosmetic” surgeon, even if they have not completed an ABPS- approved program and plastic surgery residency. Board-certified plastic surgeons are able to hone their technical skills, thus improving standards of care and patient outcomes.

Better aesthetic judgement

Extensive training and knowledge in all facets of plastic surgery not only provides the technical expertise, but also a sharper eye for aesthetics. Just because a surgeon knows how to augment the bust line with silicone implants doesn’t mean they have aesthetic judgement to know which size would best complement the patient’s frame and proportions. In the same vein, virtually any physician can wield a syringe, and some are practicing outside of their medical specialty. Doctors who have been deemed ExpertInjectors by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have the hands-on experience and training to use FDA-approved fillers and injectables for aesthetic purposes. Next time you see a “Medi Spa” advertising low-cost injectables or at-home Botox parties, ask yourself if it’s worth the risk to save a few dollars.

Surgical facility certifications

By choosing a board-certified surgeon, you can also be assured that they operate in a surgical facility that is safe, well-equipped and accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. It’s also a good idea to ask your board-certified practitioner about their hospital privileges, since facilities perform extensive background checks before extending these privileges.

Plastic surgery in NYC

Finding a highly skilled, ABPS board-certified plastic surgeon is important for your health and safety. Dr. B. Aviva Preminger is Ivy League educated, board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and has hospital privileges at Lenox Hill-Manhattan Eye and Ear Infirmary, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. She also has qualifications as an ExpertInjector™.

Cosmetic Procedures Are Increasingly Popular Among Millennials

Beautiful fashionable girl taking a selfie with smartphone. Beautiful brunette young woman wearing a warm coat photographing herself on a autumn day. Retouched, vibrant colors and sun flaresBotox, dermal fillers, and more extensive treatments like facelifts have long been prized by older adults for their ability to turn back the clock. But increasingly, plastic surgeons are seeing patients who are too young to worry about crow’s feet and sagging necks. Millennials are fueling the surge in minimally invasive cosmetic treatments in the U.S. Botox is becoming particularly popular among the selfie set, perhaps precisely because social media has made one’s image more important than ever for this generation.

“Millennials are savvy consumers of social media and every day, they see flawless-looking images of everyone from their closest friends to the most popular celebrities,” says Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, a plastic surgeon in NYC. “There’s nothing inherently wrong about receiving cosmetic treatments in one’s 20s, but it’s important to have realistic expectations, to have clearly defined reasons for getting the treatment, and to be fully informed of the potential side effects.”

Minimally invasive options that produce rapid results

Who’s considering getting Botox in New York City? Botox isn’t just for older adults with moderate to severe horizontal wrinkles across the forehead. Many plastic surgeons administer Botox for younger patients who would like to use it as a preventive treatment. Since Botox relaxes the underlying muscles to prevent them from contracting, it can actually delay the formation of lines and wrinkles. Young women and men in their 20s are increasingly turning to Botox as a way to achieve smooth, flawless-looking skin that looks incredible in a selfie, but there are other options as well.

Restylane and Juvederm, for example, are popular choices for plumping up the skin. These are also cosmetic injectables, but they don’t work the same way that Botox does. Restylane and Juvederm are types of dermal fillers, which work by literally filling in the areas under the skin to create pleasing contours and fill in wrinkles. Some injected dermal fillers can even be used on the lips, which is an option that is particularly popular among millennials who desire that “pouty lip” look.

The importance of being an informed patient

Increasingly, younger patients are viewing cosmetic injectables as just another tool in their skincare arsenal. Although these treatments are quite safe for most people, it’s important to bear in mind that they are first and foremost medical procedures. If you’re considering an injectable or other minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, be sure to tell the doctor about your health history. Your doctor will need to know about your medical conditions and medications. You should also take the time to understand the side effects that may occur.

Dr. B. Aviva Preminger welcomes new and current patients who are interested in enhancing their natural beauty with cosmetic treatments. Widely recognized as a leading expert in her field, Dr. Preminger prides herself on extensive patient education. During your confidential consult, Dr. Preminger will answer all of your questions and take the time to get to know you before offering personalized recommendations that are appropriate for you. Instagram Inspires Plastic Surgery Trends

Beautiful face of young adult woman with clean fresh skin - isolated on white

The results of a recent survey conducted by the American Academy of Facial & Plastic Surgery hints at the power of social media to influence major life decisions. According to more than 40 percent of surgeons polled, one of the biggest reasons patients cite for getting cosmetic enhancements is to take better selfies and look flawless on Facebook, Instagram and SnapChat. There is intense pressure to look your best when you know that family, friends, co-workers and others may be scrolling through your social media accounts – perhaps making comments or judgements about your appearance.

Instagram influences plastic surgery

A separate survey posted on medical review site RealSelf found similar outcomes, with 50 percent of respondents stating their decision to have cosmetic surgery was influenced by Facebook and Instagram, where selfies are ubiquitous. Patients simply want better, more beautiful selfies, and many look to their favorite celebrities for inspiration. Celebrity Instagram feeds are peppered with selfies showing perfect breasts, luscious lips, tiny waists and flawless skin.

While a general uptick in plastic surgery is evident (115 percent increase over the past 16 years), the types of procedures performed have definitely shifted — especially among the Millennial crowd — who are opting for more subtle tweaks in lieu of major operations. Patients not only want to look great for their age, they want to physically emulate their favorite actresses, singers and reality stars, whether it’s Kylie Jenner or Ariana Grande.

More non-invasive cosmetic procedures

In 2016, the American Academy of Facial & Plastic Reconstructive Surgery polled cosmetic surgeons and found that many patients are choosing less-invasive procedures based on the celebrities they follow on social media. A whopping 66 percent said that lip fillers were the most popular procedure in 2016, perhaps largely in part to the sensuous pout of Kylie Jenner, who admitted having lip augmentation after several months of denial.  Of the nearly 16 million cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2015:

  • 7 million were Botox injections, used to smooth wrinkles around the mouth, eyes and forehead
  • 4 million were dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm, used to restore volume and erase lines
  • 222,051 were liposuction , which saw a 5 percent spike compared to 2014
  • 279,140 were breast augmentation, which dropped 2 percent over the last year
  • 217,980 were rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery)
  • 203,930 were eyelid surgeries
  • 127,970 were tummy tucks

NYC plastic surgery

There is no denying the influence of selfies and social media, which often forces people to be overly self-critical about perceived flaws. Any type of plastic surgery, whether a nose job or facial fillers, needs to be approached with healthy and realistic motivations.

If you are unhappy with your looks and are considering any kind of cosmetic enhancement, it’s important to discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon. At Preminger Plastic Surgery in Manhattan, we pride ourselves on individualized attention, open communication and patient satisfaction.

Top Plastic Surgery Trends for 2017 Revealed

carrie - ultherapy model

Reports are coming in from overseas that the top trends in cosmetic surgery for 2017 will include a skyrocketing demand for bigger butts, smaller breasts, and quicker recovery times. Plastic surgeons had already begun to see an increased demand for Brazilian butt lifts, thanks to the “Kardashian Effect,” but clearly, this is a trend that is only expected to pick up steam. Of course, just because a procedure is considered to be trendy doesn’t make it the best choice for every patient. If you’re concerned about your appearance, it’s advisable to seek a personal consult with an experienced plastic surgeon who speaks with you – not at you – in reaching a decision about which cosmetic procedure with help you reach your goals.

Is smaller better?

After years of dominating the list of most requested plastic surgeries, it’s possible that breast augmentation might start to decline in favor of breast reduction. Plastic surgeons say that the increased requests for breast reductions and reductions in nipple sizes has been fueled by the trend toward favoring athletic builds. Celebrities like Ellie Goulding and the ever-popular Taylor Swift epitomize the long, lean look of the athlete that many women wish to emulate.

Another possible influence in this trend is the growing popularity of hardcore athletic training programs like CrossFit, which has seen scores of women embrace weightlifting.

Lifting the derriere

The growing demand for a bigger, uplifted butt isn’t going away any time soon. This type of derriere has been made popular by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez. A more voluptuous bottom can be achieved with buttock implants or with autologous fat grafting. Fat grafting involves injecting the patient’s own fat (taken from elsewhere in the body) back into the buttocks to shape the silhouette.

Walk-in/walk-out cosmetic enhancements

In 2017, plastic surgeons can expect to see a rise in the requests for “lunchtime enhancements.” People who are juggling demands at work with family obligations often lack the time to take a few weeks off to recover from a major procedure. The solution is minimally invasive procedures that require a shorter recovery time and far less time spent in the office, allowing patients to return to the comfort of their own homes more quickly.

Additionally, plastic surgeons have been seeing an increase in the number of patients who request local anesthetics for procedures instead of general anesthesia, which induces unconsciousness. Local anesthesia is considered safer for patients, since some patients may experience adverse reactions to general anesthesia. Facelifts and certain types of breast procedures are among those that have been performed under local anesthesia more frequently.

Achieving your aesthetic goals in 2017

Dr. B. Aviva Preminger prides herself on her unwavering commitment to patient safety and artistic, natural-looking results. Dr. Preminger offers breast reduction, nipple reduction, Brazilian butt lifts, facelifts, and many other cosmetic procedures. If you’re curious about what cosmetic enhancements can do for you, you’re invited to schedule a one-on-one consultation. Call our NYC office today to make an appointment.

Dr. Preminger Quoted in New Beauty Magazine

Small-New-Profile---Preminger2017 ushers in a new chapter to healthier, happier living. For many, January marks the start of better eating habits, regular workouts at the gym, and attempts to drop that stubborn holiday weight. Remember when sticking to New Year’s resolutions to get fit was easy?  A couple months of clean eating and intense cardio were enough to kick-start your trim-down in your 20’s and early 30’s, but once middle age sets in, it gets harder and harder to drop weight. Why is it so challenging to blast fat away as we approach menopause? Dr. B. Aviva Preminger, NYC plastic surgeon, weighs in on this hot topic in the January issue of New Beauty magazine, which highlights the latest beauty secrets and trends in cosmetic surgery.

Although genetics do affect how and where we pack on weight as we age, Dr. Preminger explains that metabolic rate is another crucial factor. As we get older, the metabolism begins to slow down, meaning fewer calories are burned. For women entering their menopausal years, this metabolic slowdown is exacerbated by a noticeable drop in hormones like testosterone and estrogen. The cumulative effect is a drop in lean muscle mass and an increase in body fat, especially around the midsection. In order to trim our waistlines, we have to not only exercise more than we did before, but focus on building muscle as well.

When diet & exercise aren’t enough

The experts quoted by New Beauty recognize that all the ab crunches in the world can’t undo the workings of genetics and Father Time. Some people are just inherently predisposed to develop double chins or carry a “spare tire” around the bellies, particularly after hitting their 40’s. In situations like these, when healthy eating and exercise can only do so much, plastic surgery can be the ticket to melting away stubborn fat.

One of the most innovative fat blasting treatments on the market today is Kybella, which smooths out fat bulges under the chin. Kybella, which uses deoxycholic acid to break down lipids, is a great way to see a noticeable reduction in under-chin fullness, says Dr. Preminger, who administers the lunch-hour procedure in her Manhattan office. Most patients benefit from a series of Kybella treatments, up to three or four, and see visible results after a few months.  Much cheaper than a neck lift, Kybella injections are non-invasive, virtually painless and have a strong track record of success. In previous clinical studies almost 80 percent of patients were satisfied with the results 12 weeks after treatment.

Bothered by saddle bags, love handles and under arm fat? Thanks to technological advances, you can now freeze your fat away with CoolSculpting. This fat freezing procedure works wonders for people who are within a reasonable weight and want to target diet-resistant pockets of fat. The in-office treatment can last 45 minutes to one hour, during which time the device actually freezes adipose cells, which are later naturally eliminated by the body. Most patients see a 25 percent reduction in fat in treated areas, says Dr. Preminger, who adds that tenderness, swelling and redness are the most common side effects. Perhaps one of the best aspects of CoolSculpting is that the results are permanent – as long as you maintain a normal weight.  This novel treatment has garnered rave reviews from the likes of Ali Landry, a former model and mother of three who finally got her waistline back after just one Coolsculpting treatment.
